Safety Department Summer Intern

William A. Hazel, Inc., a total site development contractor for over 60 years, is looking for a Summer Intern for our Safety Department. This position reports to and is under the direction of the VP of Safety. William A. Hazel, Inc., operates all over the Northern Virginia Area, including some areas in West Virginia. Position Overview: As a Safety Intern at William A. Hazel, inc., you will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in promoting and ensuring a safe working environment on construction sites. Under the guidance of our experienced safety professionals, you will assist in implementing and monitoring safety policies, conducting safety inspections, and providing safety training to employees. This internship will provide valuable exposure to various aspects of safety management within the construction industry and is an excellent opportunity for individuals pursuing a career in occupational health and safety.

Responsibilities:

  1. Assist in conducting regular safety inspections of construction sites to identify hazards and ensure compliance with safety regulations and company policies.
  2. Participate in safety meetings and toolbox talks, contributing to discussions on safety best practices and potential hazards.
  3. Support the development and implementation of safety training programs for employees, including new hire orientations and specialized training sessions.
  4. Assist in investigating accidents and incidents, documenting findings, and recommending corrective actions to prevent future occurrences.
  5. Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incidents, and training activities, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
  6. Collaborate with project managers, supervisors, and subcontractors to address safety concerns and implement effective safety measures.
  7. Stay informed about changes in safety regulations and industry best practices, sharing relevant information with the safety team and other stakeholders.
  8. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Safety Manager or supervising safety professional.

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a degree program in occupational health and safety, environmental science, construction management, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of occupational safety regulations and practices, preferably within the construction industry.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate safety information to diverse audiences.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment, collaborating with colleagues to achieve common goals.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software applications.

Duration and Compensation: This is a summer internship position with a competitive compensation package. The duration of the internship may vary depending on the candidate’s availability and the needs of the company.
